This portrait gives an insight in the life and work of the photorealist painter Richard Estes, who has been admired by artists ranging from Salvador Dali to Chuck Close. Olympia Stone's documentary benefits from intimate knowledge of the artist who takes her through the various steps of his career with art work from his archive. We find out how Estes manages to create convincing three-dimensionality on a two-dimensional canvas. His main subjects are cityscapes, telephone booths, storefronts, but he also applies his technique to landscapes and has made a few wonderful portraits.

Poorhouse also represents other documentaries by Olympia Stone: Curious Worlds: The Art and Imagination of David Beck, The Cardboard Bernini and Double Take: The Art of Elizabeth King.
